The Ventura County Sheriff's Office says deputies have caught a suspected avocado thief.

On April 15th, a grower in Fillmore reported what appeared to be evidence of the attempted theft of a large amount of avocados.

Wednesday a deputy spotted a 32-year-old Fillmore man he knew was on probation for a similar crime in the past.

Because he was on probation, deputies were able to search the man, his vehicle, and his residence and they found methamphetamine and also evidence that tied him to the attempted theft of the avocados that had been reported on April 15th.

The sheriff's office says that law enforcement and growers in the Santa Clara River Valley have developed a cooperative effort aimed at cracking down on agricultural thefts.
