An Oxnard man was killed late Tuesday morning after being struck by an Amtrak passenger train while riding his bicycle.
Oxnard Police Commander Luis McArthur told KVTA News that it happened shortly after 11 AM about 100 yards from the Oxnard Transportation Center.
He says the Pacific Surfliner was northbound approaching the OTC as the 32-year-old man was riding his bicycle on the tracks also traveling northbound ahead of the train.
McArthur says the train's engineer sounded the horn several times and tried to stop but was unable to do so and struck the bicyclist from behind.
Witnesses told police that it looked to them as if the train was traveling maybe 20-30 mph as approached the area.
McArthur says the bicyclist was wearing a hoodie pulled up over his head and appeared to make no attempt to get out of the way of the train.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one on the train was hurt.
