A Santa Paula Gang Member Sentenced To Prison For A Shooting That Killed An Innocent Woman

Monday July 15, 2019

A Ventura County judge Monday sentenced a Santa Paula gang member to a prison term that guarantees he will die behind bars for a shooting five years ago that claimed the life of an innocent woman.

36-year-old Mark Martinez was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole, plus 65-years-to-life in prison for the March 2014 gang-related shooting that killed 39-year-old Norma Elizalde.

Prosecutors say that Martinez was involved in a gang shooting near her home in the 1200 block of High Street when he shot at one of the other rival gang members.

That bullet traveled into Elizalde's home and killed her.

Martinez was convicted by a jury of First Degree Murder with a Special Circumstance Allegation of a killing while involved in a gang.

The jury also found him guilty of shooting at an inhabited dwelling, plus special allegations of gang involvement and discharging a firearm.
