The Ventura County Aviation Unit's Copter 9 rescued several people and their pets from a piece of the Santa Clara River bottom that was turned into an island because of rising storm waters.

It happened early Thursday afternoon in the Santa Clara River near Santa Paula.

The three people and their cats got stranded on that piece of land in the middle of the river by rising waters brought on by several inches of rain overnight.

The copter hovered over the island and hoisted the people and pets into the helicopter and then airlifted them a short distance to the shore to firefighters waiting to check them out.

The rescue went smoothly and everyone was OK.
