Oxnard police say they arrested a tax preparer for his alleged involvement in a years-long systematic fraud of those people he wa supposed to be helping with their income taxes.
They say the three-year investigation turned up evidence alleging that 42-year-old Steven Cervantes of Oxnard defrauded his clients and the businesses he worked for out of thousands of dollars.
Police allege that Cervantes would cash his clients' refund checks and steal the money, provide counterfeit refund checks to clients, and open fraudulent pre-paid debit accounts using his clients' personal identifying information.
Investigators allege that Cervantes did all this without the knowledge or permission of his clients.
Cervantes surrendered to the authorities last week and was apparently booked and released at the Oxnard Police station.
