Ex-Cheerleading Coach From Simi Valley Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting Woman On Cruise Ship

Monday July 15, 2019

A federal judge Monday sentenced a former cheerleading coach from Simi Valley for sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman on board a cruise ship four years ago.

30-year-old Anthony Paul De La Torriente was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in federal prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

On February 13th, De La Torriente was convicted by a federal jury on one count of sexual abuse and one count of abusive sexual contact.

The jury found that he knew the victim was physically unable to decline participation or she had communicated unwillingness to engage in the sexual act.

Prosecutors say the sexual assault happened in the summer of 2015 on a cruise ship in Ensenada, Mexico.

They say De La Torriente had volunteered to stay alone with the woman in her cabin after their colleagues were concerned about her level of intoxication following a daytime excursion.

Prosecutors say De La Torriente double-locked the cabin doors and sexually assaulted the woman.

They say when the colleagues returned from their meal they found the cabin had been double locked from the inside.

When De La Torriente finally let them in, the victim reported the assault to the cruise ship's medical and security staff.

They say DNA and other evidence supported her claim that she had been sexually assaulted.
